A Postscript from Detlef
With this letter, I bid farewell to the EBA members and delegates as Secretary of the European Bonsai Association, for which I have worked as EBA Secretary since 2005 (from 2003 as a member of the EBA Board). The period during which I, as secretary, was able to help shape the main part of the organization and administration was a very successful time for the EBA.
I would like to thank my friends on the EBA Boards, as well as the countless partners and supporters from the member countries, for the excellent cooperation during this time. I have met many dedicated EBA delegates, EBA Board members, club officials and bonsai enthusiasts over the years and deep friendships have developed. On behalf of everyone, I would like to highlight our long-serving president, Reg Bolton.
Thanks to Nigel Wright for his many years of service as EBA Webmaster. Since taking over this job from Klaus Buddig, he has been responsible for implementing our vision of communicating with EBA members via our EBA website. Meeting the diverse requirements has not always been easy.
As stipulated in the statutes, I will continue to serve on the Board for another year without voting rights to ensure a flawless handover of my extensive tasks to Matthias Graf, the new Secretary. As the EBA delegate for Austria, I will continue to participate in the various bonsai events in Europe and look forward to many reunions with my old friends.
I would like to thank my wife, Christa, for her help in translating the countless documents I compiled for the EBA organization, especially in drafting the new "EBA Bylaws," the "EBA Internal Rules," and the "NTC Rules" at the beginning of my tenure. She also accompanied me on my travels to the more than 23 EBA conventions across Europe.
Now I should have a little more time to pursue my other interests and bonsai projects in my garden.
With best wishes for the continued success of the European Bonsai Association under the new EBA Board!
Detlef Mostler
EBA Convention NTC
9 - 12 April 2026
Banská Bystrica, Slovakia
For the first time, an EBA Convention was held in Slovakia. From April 9th - 12th, 2026, the member countries of the EBA met in Banská Bystrica at the invitation of the SBA to present their bonsai. Simultaneously, the SBA organized its national bonsai exhibition as part of the Gardeniada, a spring garden festival where visitors could purchase everything they needed for their gardening.
On Thursday, the exhibits were delivered, photographed, and set up in the carefully prepared rooms of the Hotel Lux. The convention was then officially opened by the presidents of the SBA, Lukas Jancina, and the EBA, Marc Noelanders, in the presence of the mayor and the Japanese ambassador, with numerous EBA members in attendance.
In the following days, many visitors took the opportunity to visit the bonsai exhibitions in addition to the garden show. There were outstanding bonsai and suiseki to admire and international demonstrators from Japan, China, and Europe showcased their considerable skills. The EBA board meeting took place on Friday, the NTC with 12 participants, the RTM on Saturday and the AGM took place on Sunday morning.
On behalf of the EBA Board we would like to thank Lukas Jancina and the team from SBA for their extensive work done. Many thanks from the EBA Board to all participants (exhibitors, demonstrators, delegates, NTC candidates, judges and visitors) of the member countries and to all supporters for managing the program, the exhibition and the Gala Evening together with the award ceremony
